Grey’s Anatomy

Rhimes proceeded with the development of a new project in 2003 called “Grey’s Anatomy.” In 2005, ABC purchased it on a pitch and planned it as a midseason replacement. In March 2005, “Grey’s Anatomy” started as a mid-season replacement.

“Grey’s Anatomy” drew 20 million viewers each week by the conclusion of the first season. ABC stated in May 2006 that “Grey’s Anatomy” would be moved to Thursdays to headline the network’s Thursday evening programming.

In 2007, Rhimes came up with the “Grey’s Anatomy” spin-off series “Private Practice.” In 2012, ABC ordered 13 episodes of “Private Practice” for the 2012–2013 TV season. The final episode of the series aired on January 22, 2013.

Rhimes informed E! in 2017 that she and “Grey’s Anatomy” star Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) have a long-standing agreement to continue doing the program for as long as Pompeo wishes. “I and Ellen [Pompeo] have an agreement that I will host the show as long as she does the program.”

So the program will continue to operate as long as both of us want it to. If she decides to quit, we will stop. So, I’m not sure whether we’ll see 600, but I intend to keep things moving. So far, there are new stories to tell, and we are both thrilled about the stories being told. We’re on it.  “So we’ll see where that leads.”

Kim Raver, Kevin McKidd, and Camilla Luddington signed three-year contracts with “Grey’s Anatomy” for the 2020–2021 season. Fans are speculating that Rhimes and Pompeo have a three-year plan to conclude “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Shondaland’s second “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff series, “Station 19,” was aired on ABC in 2018. It revolves around a gang of Seattle firemen and EMTs who have connections to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and several “Grey’s Anatomy” cast members.

In 2011, ABC selected Rhimes’ pilot script “Scandal” to become a series. Olivia Pope, a political crisis management expert, was played by Kerry Washington. “Scandal” premiered for seven seasons, beginning in April 2012 and concluding in April 2019.

ABC approved a pilot for a new Rhimes series, “How to Get Away with Murder,” in December 2013. In February 2014, actress Viola Davis was selected as the lead character.

On May 8, 2014, it was officially ordered into a series. ABC renewed the sitcom for a sixth and final season in May 2019, which aired on September 26, 2019.

Netflix Deal

On August 14, 2017, Netflix announced a development agreement with Rhimes, which said that all of her future productions would be Netflix Original shows.

It is a multi-year, exclusive contract, in addition to the fact that the streamer currently has the broadcasting rights to all recent episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal.”

In June 2018, Netflix stated that the first project under the arrangement will be an adaptation of the New York Magazine story “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People, ” which was authored by Jessica Pressler.

Rhimes’ rendition of the narrative, called “Inventing Anna,” will be a 10-part series featuring “Veep’s” Anna Chlumsky as a journalist (supposedly based on Pressler) investigating a German heiress played by “Ozark’s” bright Julia Garner.

Laverne Cox from “Orange Is the New Black” and Katie Lowes from “Scandal” were also featured. “Inventing Anna” allegedly began filming in October 2019, so the project had time to conclude before the coronavirus epidemic halted the movie and television project (and everything else).

The Rhimes-produced “Bridgerton” appeared on Netflix in 2020. Rhimes and Julie Andrews were reunited in the series. It is based on Julia Quinn’s best-selling novels and also about the super competitive world of opulent society in London during the Regency era.

Personal Life

In June 2002, Rimes adopted her first child and another baby girl in February 2012. Shonda gave birth to her third child through a surrogate in September 2013.

She delivered the commencement address at her alma school, Dartmouth College, where she was awarded an honorary degree in 2014.

Shonda Rhimes reported in September 2015 that she has shed 117 pounds via exercise and eating.

Shonda always feels emotional whenever the song “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol is played.

It was the music that was playing in the episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” where Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) died. That was done on purpose.

That episode (Season 11, Episode 21) is titled “How To Save a Life,” which is also the title of a song by The Fray.

When Derek died, Rhimes changed the music playing to “Chasing Cars” at the last second before it was scheduled to run. The production team was unsure whether the music could be replaced.

The whole post-production team was gathered around the little monitor that serves as the East Coast feed, down the hallway, listening and waiting to see what would happen.

When it happened, there was a loud cheer. “Chasing Cars” was playing while Meredith sat at Derek’s side as the medical staff removed him from life support.

Contracts and Earnings

Rhimes signed a four-year agreement with Netflix worth an estimated $100 million in 2017. Shonda’s income has been bolstered by her years at ABC, where she developed long-running programs.

She doesn’t simply get paid for each episode of each of her shows—which totals more than 317 for Grey’s Anatomy alone.

She also received an additional $10 million per year from ABC between 2015 and 2018, as well as at least 10% of the proceeds when her series was syndicated or sold to streaming providers. This works up to around $1 million per episode for Rhimes.
